Necklace. Björn Weckström. "Labyrinth", Lapponia, Finland, 1985. Sterling 925 silver. Length 41 cm.
Lapponia was an internationally celebrated collaboration of artistic jewelry design. Founded by Björn Weckström and Pekka Anttila in the 1960's, after Björn had had artistic explorations with Lapland gold brought to him in a glass bottle. Pekka Anttila Lapponia's jewelry explored the arctic, the nature, and even space. The duo won its first international prize in Rio de Janeiro with the Flowering Wall gold necklace. Since then brand's jewelry has been worn by Princess Leia in Star Wars (Planetoid Valleys) as well as Yoko Ono (Petrified Lake) after being gifted by John Lennon.
Since the 1970's the designer team expanded with numerous Scandinavian designers and among others Hungarian Zoltan Popovits, Danish Poul Havgaard and American Karim Rashid. In 2020 the brand was merged into Kalevala Koru, which ended the nearly 60 year old story of Lapponia Jewelry.
